History of Ranthambore National Park - A Trip Down Memory Lane

Ranthambore National Park is one of the few national parks in India which have attained a significant place in Indian history. After belonging to the Rajput king Hamir, Ranthambore national park reached the pinnacle of its glory when emperor Akbar captured it in 1569 AD.
The region is known for the several hunting parties organised in the region for dignitaries. One such party was organised in 1949 for Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. It was finally decided by the former rulers of Jaipur to preserve the area. It was in the year 1955 that Ranthambore became a game sanctuary and was amongst the first few protected areas in India. |

| Ranthambore was accorded the National Park status in 1984 covering almost 400 sq kms. It was also declared as a tiger reserve, when Project Tiger was initiated in 1972. The primary species of Ranthambore national park is the Asiatic Tiger. One of the only places on earth to find this rare species is the Ranthambore park. |
