Birdwatching in Ranthambore - Second Home of the Himalayan Birds

Ranthambore is popularly know as the tiger reserve of the north-west. But one is surprised to find that Ranthambore is also a sustainable habitat for migratory birds that arrive during the winters, courtesy the large water bodies in the park. Apart from the migratory birds the resident birds of Ranthambore are a sight to treasure. The best season for birdwatching begins from October and lasts the entire winters till March.

Birdwatching tours are conducted by the hotels and wildlife authorities, and birdwatching is done by a jeep or motorised safari. The major hotspots for birdwatching are besides the water bodies. eg. Malik talao, padam talao etc. It is advisable to hire a guide who is a local resident and is well versed with the bird species and the spots where one can find exotic species of birds.
The resident species of birds that one can find in Ranthambore are the great Indian horned owl, eagles, parakeets, spoonbills, kingfishers, quails, storks, geese and ducks. A variety of migratory birds are also found in Ranthambore which include the grey legged goose, pintails, and shell ducks.
